Bight Receives Over $250,000 From Canada Media Fund For Social Game

Prince Edward Island-based developer Bight Games has received more than $250,000 in funding from Canada Media Fund's Experimental Stream for Scallywags, a Facebook title currently under development.

Founded in 2004, the 30-strong studio specializes in iPhone titles such as Legends of Wrestle Mania, Fleeced!: Shea Terror, and Puzzlings. It's newly funded project is a social game that involves geocaching and has players exploring the Seven Seas as a pirate out for treasure.

CMF's contribution will fund 75 percent of the Scallywags project, though it's not free cash. "They're a partner, and in exchange for their money, they're taking 50 per cent of the revenues," Bight's CEO Stuart Duncan explained in an interview with CBC News.

He added, "So, it's not all that sweetheart of a deal. It's a similar deal to one I could get from a traditional publisher." Regardless, Duncan said that until Canada has more venture capital for game development, funding like this is beneficial and he plans to apply for more CMF cash in the future.

More than 250 applicants requested $90 million worth of funding from the first round of CMF's Experimental Stream, which is dedicated to supporting "innovative Canadian interactive digital media content and application software" with commercial potential.

CMF selected 27 projects for its first round of Experimental Stream funding, rewarding $16.2 million to selected applicants -- a dozen of which are video games. Organizers have extended the final deadline for second round applications, which will give out $10.8 million, to November 12.
